While games like Grand Theft Auto 4 may be all the rage today with their advanced graphics and expansive maps, old school classics like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaga haven’t become any less fun over the years. We went down to the Twiistup event in Santa Monica to speak to Steve Wiebe and Walter Day from the documentary movie, The King of Kong to find out why games that were made over two decades ago are still being played, and to get the scoop on Steve’s Donkey Kong world record attempt. We also took two steps outside our studio to speak to gamers at the Joystiq.com reader meetup, which was hosted at Mahalo’s HQ. Make sure to leave a comment telling us what your favorite retro video game is!

Excellent episode! It was an unexpected treat to see Steve Weebie in there, too. Billy Mitchell unavailable for comment, of course (spineless twirp).
These episodes are getting better and better, keep up the good work.

Did he break the record or not?

You asked me to speak about my favorite classic game at the Joystiq meetup, and when put on the spot, I couldn’t even think of any I used to play. Now that I’ve had a moment to consider it, I think Pac-man is my favorite. I still enjoy playing it to this day, so it’s gotta be good, right?

Asteroid and Galaga without a doubt. I do agree with jonathan, you left us hanging wondering if Steve broke the record. Nevertheless great episode. You brought back some good memories. Thanks Leah.

I can’t remember the name of the game. It was a laser disc/anime style. (not Dragon’s Lair) It was like playing Spy Hunter; also a great game. I figured out the entire pattern and could play it start to finish in about 45 minutes.

If I had to choose my favorite classic game, it would probably have to be Tetris. I was awesome at Tetris and still am. My record was 310 lines. I havent played classic Tetris in a while but I play Blockes a fair bit which is like a multiplayer version of Tetris on steroids.

I found it! The game I was looking for is called Cliff Hanger. There were a few knock offs to Dragon’s Lair but I remember I had so much fun with this one.

No one’s mentioned Space Invaders? I could play that for hours and hours.

Galaga by far. I was playing Space Invaders before I could even walk, it’s barely even a legible memory for me, but Galaga has my #1. It’s so simple. You’re one ship and they are many enemies. It’s like 300… only in space… and there are no Spartans at all, so it’s not at all like 300…

My favorite was Stargate (Defender II). I was in high school during the early ’80s. Good times!

My favorite isnt really an old school classic, but more of a late classic from 1991— Terminator 2 Judgment Day standup shooter. But I also love Pole Position, Pacman, Galaga, Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons.
